Recipe Variations and Substitutions

  • Vegetarian Version:Skip the rotisserie chicken and use extra black beans, corn, and spinach for the filling. You can also add diced zucchini or sautéed mushrooms for more vegetable variety. Consider using plant-based cheese or omitting the cheese altogether.
  • Spicy Kick:Add diced jalapenos or chipotle peppers in adobo sauce to the filling for an extra spicy flavor. Use pepper jack cheese instead of Mexican cheese for an added kick.
  • Seafood Twist:Replace the chicken with small cooked shrimp or shredded crab meat for a seafood version.
  • Healthier Baked Option:Instead of frying, you can bake the egg rolls in a preheated oven at 375°F for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Brush the egg rolls with olive oil before baking to help them crisp up.
  • Gluten-Free Version:Substitute the flour tortillas with gluten-free tortillas or rice paper wrappers for a gluten-free option. Ensure all other gluten-free ingredients, including the taco seasoning and ranch dressing.
  • Different Dipping Sauces:Instead of avocado ranch, try serving the egg rolls with spicy salsa, a tangy lime-cilantro crema, or smoky chipotle aioli.
  • Mediterranean Flavors:Replace the taco seasoning with Mediterranean herbs like oregano, basil, and thyme. Use feta cheese instead of Mexican cheese. Add diced sun-dried tomatoes and Kalamata olives to the filling.

Storage Tips

SERVE:Serve with the avocado ranch dipping sauce. You can keep the southwest egg rolls out for no later than two hours before storing and refrigerating them.

STORE:Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.

FAQs

What is the best oil to fry egg rolls in? ›

Peanut oil is great for frying egg rolls as it has a high smoking point and provides a nutty flavor. If you don't have it on hand, you can use canola or corn oil. Do not use oils like sesame oil or olive oil, as they are not good candidates for deep-frying due to their low smoking point.

Why are my homemade egg rolls soggy? ›

Remove All Excess Moisture: You don't want any excess moisture in the filling because it can make your egg rolls soggy! Soggy egg rolls can easily tear, resulting in a waste of time and effort! Taste before Wrapping: Make sure to taste your filling before wrapping your rolls to ensure they are seasoned to your liking!

How to make frozen egg rolls better? ›

For best results, warm your oven up to 375 degrees and arrange your frozen egg rolls on top of a wire rack placed on a baking sheet. The rack ensures that the heat reaches the rolls on all sides for the crispiest exterior possible. Bake for 20 minutes, turning each egg roll over halfway through.

Do you use water or egg wash to seal egg rolls? ›

We use an egg wash (1 beaten egg and 1 tablespoon water) to seal our egg rolls. However, our vegetarian egg roll can become a vegan egg roll if you use a cornstarch slurry as a sealer (in addition to eggless wrappers).

Why are my egg rolls not crispy? ›

Keep Oil at 350˚F – If the temperature drops too low, the egg rolls will be soggy and oily. If it's too hot, they will burn before the filling is cooked through. Ensure the oil does not drop below 325F.

How to keep eggrolls crispy? ›

Cool your rolls on a wire rack instead of a paper towel or plate. Regardless of whether you air fried, deep-fried, or baked your egg rolls, do not let them cool on a paper towel or plate. Instead, use a pair of tongs to set the egg rolls on a raised cooling rack with a baking sheet underneath it.

Should you freeze egg rolls before frying? ›

Freeze for up to 4 months. To cook the frozen egg rolls, just add them straight to the hot oil from frozen and cook an extra 1 ½ minutes longer than normal, for about 4-5 minutes total. Or if baking, add an extra 5 minutes to the bake time from frozen.

What is egg roll filling made of? ›

Classic egg rolls are fried, savory rolls wrapped in a wheat flour wrapper. They are filled with cabbage, carrots, onions, and sometimes chopped roasted pork. The fried skin of an egg roll has little crackly bubbles that are crisp and fun to eat. The name is a misnomer since there are no eggs in egg rolls!

How do you know when egg rolls are done? ›

Gently drop egg rolls into the oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Cook until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes. Once egg rolls are done place them on a paper towel-lined sheet tray. The paper towels will help absorb some of the excess oil and prevent them from getting soggy.

What is the best sauce to eat with eggrolls? ›

Egg rolls pair well with sweet chili sauce, sriracha, Chinese hot mustard, keto teriyaki sauce, sweet and sour sauce, homemade egg roll dip sauce, and Chinese plum sauce. These sauces provide a balance of sweet, spicy, savory, and sour flavors that complement the egg roll filling.

Can I roll egg rolls ahead of time? ›

To assemble egg rolls ahead of time, roll them in egg roll wrappers, place in an airtight container, covering them with a damp cloth before applying the lid. Refrigerate for a few hours. Cooked egg rolls can also be made ahead of time, then reheated in an air fryer or hot skillet until toasted again on all sides.

Can I double wrap my egg rolls? ›

roll up wrap tightly to enclose filling, sealing roll with top flap. Make sure that you moisten every seam of the rolls with water and press them together until they 'stick'. Double wrap the egg rolls to ensure that they bake crispy and are more sturdy.

Do you use milk or butter for egg wash? ›

For a lighter, slightly shinier sheen with a softer crust, use milk or heavy cream. For a firmer, lighter crust with little shine, use only the egg white and water. For a darker, richer hue, use only the egg yolk.

How to drain grease from egg rolls? ›

Once You've fried your eggrolls - place them on a rack set above a baking sheet and pop in the oven for 3-5 minutes. Remove egg rolls from oven and place on a paper towel lined plate to cool. This will help remove any more oil off of the rolls before eating.

What is the best oil for crispy eggs? ›
