My wonderful sister gets all the credit for this major family-pleaser! She has been making a meaty version of this recipe for years–it is her family’s absolute favorite meal–and I finally got her to share it with me! My whole family went crazy for it too, so of course I’m doing the only logical thing and sharing this vegetarian version with all of you.

This is one of those go-to recipes that is pretty much impossible to screw up, and you can modify it to fit whatever you happen to have on hand. Thanks Beth!

Store leftover American goulash in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. I find the best way to ensure the noodles don't overcook when reheating is to warm in the microwave, vs reheating in a pot on the stove.

The classic “kettle goulash” is prepared by frying cubes of beef or mutton with onions in lard. Garlic, caraway seeds, tomatoes, green peppers, and potatoes complete the stew. Székely gulyás, another Hungarian specialty, is a stew of pork and sauerkraut flavoured with tomatoes, onions, caraway seeds, and sour cream.

What is a substitute for tomato sauce in goulash? ›

TOMATO SAUCE: I called for tomato sauce because I wanted this recipe to be something you could make without going to the grocery store. Substitute pasta sauce, spaghetti sauce, or even pizza sauce. WATER: Amp up the flavor by substituting 1/2 cup of red or white wine for 1/2 cup of water.

Can I cook a frozen casserole without thawing? ›

Yes. It is safe to reheat frozen leftovers without thawing, either in a saucepan or microwave (in the case of a soup or stew) or in the oven or microwave (for example, casseroles and combination meals).

How to store goulash? ›

Food should be thoroughly defrosted before cooking (unless the manufacturer's instructions tell you to cook from frozen or you have a proven safe method). If food is still frozen or partially frozen, it will take longer to cook.

What is Polish goulash made of? ›

Here is your shopping list if you want to try this Polish goulash: beef stew meat, flour, onion, butter, garlic, mustard and broth or water. This rich beef stew-like dish is traditionally served with potatoes, potato pancakes, Polish dumplings or bread. I served mine with dilled new potatoes and a salad.

This German Goulash is what the Swabians in Germany call “Hungarian Goulash”. Ha! A juicy and tender beef stew made with paprika, peppers, and a red wine sauce. Originally goulash (gulyás) is from Hungary but over the centuries this traditional stew obviously traveled into different cuisines, including German cuisine.
